USA Cycling names riders to compete in UCI Mountain Bike World Championships

This morning USA Cycling released the names of all 20 riders who will be representing the United States at the upcoming cross country world championships in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa (see full list below).

More interesting than those who made the list are the names not included, most notably Jeremiah Bishop of the Sho-Air/Cannondale race team.

Bishop did not automatically qualify for the worlds team and would have been included as a discretionary pick by USA Cycling, meaning the decision to include him or not include him would be left to USA Cycling’s committee.

Jeremiah Bishop finished second to Todd Wells in the 2013 Pro XCT series, which came down to the very last race before being decided. He also had several wins in the Pro XCT series, climbing to the top of the podium at the Bonelli Park and Windham rounds of the Pro XCT circuit.

The official explanation of Bishop’s exclusion from the world championship team comes from USA Cycling communications director Bill Kellick. An email to MTB Race News from Mr. Kellick states, "Jeremiah Bishop did not meet any of the automatic criteria and he did not submit an athlete nomination petition to be considered for a discretionary spot.”

Another oddity on this year’s worlds team is the fact that five elite women will be making the trip to South Africa and only three elite men. The United States normally sends a full contingent of five elite men and women on the world championship team.

USA Cycling again attributes this to the athlete nomination petition system. It seems Michael Broderick was the only rider, other than the two automatic qualifiers, to submit a petition for inclusion to world championships team.

Meaning the likelihood of success for the U.S. team at this year’s world championships will be diminished by almost half due to failure to submit paperwork.

Certainly the thought that a nation like the United States, that has struggled so mightily, for two decades, to be competitive at a sport that started on it’s own home soil is now leaving willing and capable riders at home because of paperwork is enough to make any mountain bike fan scream.

2013 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships will take place August 26-September 1st.
