Desert Rampage - St. George, Utah
Intermountain Cup #1

Chris Holley and Jen Hanks Start the Season Off with Wins at the Desert Rampage

Written by: Shannon Boffeli

Once again riders made the annual pilgrimage from the cold and snow of Salt Lake City to the desert of southern Utan.

The Desert Rampage offers an escape from winter for the snow bound racers and a chance for everyone to test their early season legs.

In the men's riders tested each other right from the line with Cary Smith (Team CF), Brent Pontius (Rooster's/Biker's Edge), and Chris Holley (Kuhl) getting the early advantage.

Last year's winner Brent Pontius put in some early speed but after one lap he needed to back off letting Holley and Smith build a gap.

For the next 21 miles these two would battle, wheel to wheel, over the rock-strewn, high speed racecourse.

Holley held back launching his race-winning attack on the final climb of the day. Hammering his way up the climb got him just enough of a gap to comfortably descend the final downhill out front.

Cary Smith crossed the line just seconds back. Followed by Pontius who paced himself wisely into third place.

After moving to the pro class, Jon Russell took a surprising fourth place with a great ride. Scott Allen came home in fifth.

The women's race proved to be action packed as another powerful group formed early off the front. Meghan Sheridan (UtahMountainBiking.com), and Joey Lythgoe (Kuhl) formed the early break with Jen Hanks (Epic Brewing/MTBRaceNews.com) not far behind.

Hanks wouldn't be behind for long attacking immediately upon reaching the lead group.

Jen Hanks accelerated up the second technical climb of the 7-mile loop. Hanks first dispatched Lythgoe and then Sheridan before entering the long technical descent to the start finish.

Once out front Hanks held off attempts by Sheridan to bridge. Finally crossing the line just under 2 minutes ahead of Lythgoe who overtook Meghan Sheridan for the runner-up spot.

Erin Collins took fourth.
