Draper Super XC - Draper, Utah
Utah State Championship Series #4

Written by: Shannon Boffeli

This weekend’s Draper Super XC was the final race in the 2011 Utah State Championship Series (USCS). In it’s first season, the USCS offered up a steady diet of variety and excitement using new venues and an assortment of racing formats to keep things interesting throughout the season.

With the finale being this weekend’s Draper Super XC, a slightly longer course than your typical cross country event. The pro fields would complete 3 full laps on the 12-mile course with roughly 2,000 feet of climbing per lap.

The event started at 8 AM sharp, getting riders on course before temperatures in the Salt Lake Valley started to rise.

The women’s race featured a top-heavy field with virtually all the best Utah MTB women showing up for the event.

To no one’s surprise NoTubes Pro MTB rider Kathy Sherwin charged off the front hanging with the men’s pro field off the start. Behind her, KC Holley (Trek 29er Crew), Erica Tingey (White Pine Touring), and Lynda Wallenfels ( fell into line.

Out front, Sherwin was loving the course. She cruised up the climbs and let lose on the descents displaying her typical free-wheeling downhill style. Right from the start it was clear Sherwin had good form. She proved to be the fastest taking the win in 3.21.11.

Behind Sherwin a fierce, back-and-forth battle raged as Tingey and Holley traded spots all throughout the race. The two friends are closely matched and it showed as Tingey would surge ahead on the climbs and Holley would come screaming back on the descents.

Tingey held the runner-up slot until Holley ultimately overtook her on the final downhill.

Lynda Wallenfels finished fourth in front of Jenelle Kremer (Revolution/Peak Fasteners).

KC Holley’s second place finish was more than enough to secure the title of 2011 Utah State Championship Series winner.

The men’s field was an equally stacked group featuring third place finisher at Leadville Alex Grant (Cannondale) and Team USA representative Keegan Swenson (Whole Athlete/Specialized).

They were joined by many of the top names on the Utah mountain biking scene including Kevin Day (Kuhl), Nate Miller (Dolly’s), and Chris Holley (Trek 29er Crew).

Off the start, Tyson Apostol (Euclid) sprinted off the front, briefly holding the lead until he was overtaken by the hard-charging group of Grant, Swenson, and Miller.

After one lap it appeared Swenson and Grant had hooked up again, just like they had at Lambert Park and Round Valley.

Swenson had other plans as he attacked on the second lap pushing the pace and dropping Grant from his wheel. At the start of the final 12-mile loop Swenson held a 30-second lead on the Cannondale rider with Nate Miller another minute behind.

Grant wasn’t finished though. He held his pace and slowly gained time on the leader finally passing Keegan on the climb up Clark’s Trail.

"I went way too hard on the second lap,” Swenson would concede after the race. "I felt great until about 2 hours in. That’s about how long most of my races are.”

Once out front Alex Grant shredded the remaining course using his unsurpassed descending skills to push further and further ahead.

In the end, Grant would take the win with Swenson in second.

The second place would be enough for Keegan Swenson to hold onto the lead in the Utah State Championship Series and claim the series champion jersey for 2011.

Nate Miller held on to third place by a healthy margin.

The final lap saw an exciting showdown between Casey Zaugg (Utah Mountain Biking), Chris Holley, and Kevin Day. In the final miles of the race Day chased down and passed Holley out riding him on the long descents approaching the finish.

Now in fifth, Holley quickly realized he had his hands full with Casey Zaugg coming on strong and challenging him from behind.

Holley, who is an accomplished descender himself, put together a solid final DH run and held onto the final podium spot.
