Iceman Cometh - Traverse City, Michigan

Olympians Dominate as Georgia Gould and Sam Schultz Win at Iceman

Each year the Iceman Cometh, in northern Michigan, hosts one of the largest mountain bike races in the country. This year an estimated 4,000 registered riders awoke to see a light blanket of snow covering the Michigan countryside.

Iceman is a 29-mile point to point off-road race on a combination of dirt road, doubletrack, and cross country ski trails.

This year's field included a high powered field of former Iceman champions and Olympians. By race time most of the snow had melted leaving some mud and tacky trails.

The wide open racecourse generally creates some tight pack racing and this year was no different.

In both pro races a large, elite group powered away early. The men's group included big guns like 3Rox/Scott teammates Geoff Kabush and Derek Zandstra, the Subaru/Trek duo of Sam Schultz and Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski, local hotshots Brian Matter (Gear Grinder), Mike Anderson (Bissell), Jordan Wakeley, Cole House, and German rider Ben Sonntag.

In the end was Sam Schultz sprinting across the line just in front of Geoff Kabush. Brian Matter took third in front of Anderson and Sonntag. At the finish just 7 seconds separated first and fifth place.

The women's race started out in a similar fashion with Trek riders Emily Batty and Heather Irmiger making the breakaway. The Trek duo was joined by Chloe Woodruff (Crankbrothers), Mackenzie Woodring, Erica Tingey (Kuhl/Rocky Mountain), and Iceman favorite Georgia Gould (Luna).

Unlike the guys, Georgia Gould wasn't content to leave it up to a sprint finish. She broke free from the chasers before the finish to take the win by a comfortable margin.

Second went to Emily Batty with teammate Irmiger getting third with a well-timed bike throw just in front of Mackenzie Woodring. Chloe Woodruff rolled in fifth.
