On of the most competitive cross country fields of the summer converged on Newport, NH for the Pinnacle XC race on Sunday. The Pinnacle has become a racer favorite in recent years thanks to a hearty dose of singletrack, good climbs, and fast, technical, bermed descents. It's the kind of course where a good technical descender can give a climber a run for their money.
The men's pro race featured a stacked field and the pace was high from the start. The much anticipated battle between Tom Sampson (ADIGGA Racing) and Billy Melone (Riverside Racing) didn't develop as expected though. Instead, it was Sampson cruising to the win by more than three minutes. Melone hung on for second though, and Andrew Freye (Cycle Mania) showed he is riding himself into top form with a solid third place ride.
In the women's race it was Hattie Freye taking the victory by over a minute. Former downhiller Kim Quinlan (Mountain Moxie) used her technical skills to ride to a solid second place. Elizabeth Allen took third.
