Rumble at 18 Road – Fruita, Colorado

Written by: Shannon Boffeli

Late race moves paid big dividends at the 2013 Rumble at 18 Road. The 10-mile racecourse on Fruita’s nationally-renowned 18 Road trail system included over 50% double track lending Saturday’s event a real road race feel.

The pro men’s field included many local stars including Brady Kappius (Clif Bar), Ben Sonntag (Cannondale), and Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory teammates Payson McElveen and Sepp Kuss.

Kappius had the early holeshot but Kuss quickly took over the front spot. Sonntag crashed early but recovered on the second and third laps of the 3-lap race. Sonntag rode in the chase group with McElveen, Jay Henry, Peter Kalmes (Honey Stinger), and Sam Morrison (Gear Movement).

At the end it looked like Kuss would pull off the win but Sonntag put in his fastest lap of the day and took the lead just 500 meters from the finish line.

With is last lap heroics Sonntag also managed to pull Payson McElveen past his teammate Kuss but McElveen didn’t have the gas to overtake the German.

Jay Henry managed to secure fourth place and Morrison rounded put the podium in fifth.

The women’s saw a fierce group of riders form the early lead with Rebecca Gross (Tough Girls), Teal Steston-Lee (Luna), Amy Beisel, and Jen Hanks (Epic Brewing/MTBRaceNews.com).

Hanks was the first to drop as the Gross, Beisel, and Stetson-Lee powered around the ripping fast course.

At the start of lap two Teal Stetson-Lee took over at the front and hammered here way clear of the bunch.

Gross struggled with a slipping seatpost and was passed by Amy Beisel.

Seteson-Lee remained well in front of the chasers finally finishing three laps over 4 minutes clear of second place.

Amy Beisel took second follow by Rebecca Gross. Molly Throdahl managed to get past Hanks for fourth with the Epic Brewing rider hanging on for fifth.
