Transylvania Epic Stage 6 Results and Report

Sunshine greeted riders at the start line of the No Tubes Transylvania Epic for the first time in three days as riders prepared to depart for the Queen Stage of this year's race: Tussey Ridge. The stage's namesake trail, which features miles up flat to uphill rock gardens in a continuos ribbon, was emblematic of the type of trails tackled all day. Rocks, rocks, and more rocks. There were lots of great views too, but not too many racers were able to look up and take them in.

Though it was day 6 here in Pennsylvania, the GC races in a number of categories are still tight, and it was a hectic start as riders battled for position as they approached the day's first Sram Enduro section. Things quickly spread out though, as the day's biggest climb came early on, around mile 10.

In the women's race, it was a tight battle all day between GC leader Cheryl Sornson (Rare Disease Cycling), Vicki Barclay (Stan's No Tubes), and Mary McConneloug (Kenda/No Tubes). The trio was together just a few miles from the finish, when McConneloug put in a surge and rode to her first stage win of the week. Sornson and Barclay came through together soon after in 2nd and 3rd respectively.

On the men's side it was a familiar name back on top, as Jeremiah Bishop took his third stage of this year's race. The big drama was behind him though, as Nick Waite took second in Open Men's race, and in doing so was able to jump ahead of Spencer Paxson (Kona) into second overall on GC. Kris Sneddon (Kona) took third on the day and slipped past his teammate Paxson into third overall. Payson McElveen (Richard's Rainwater) is racing in the Epic Team category, and so does not factor into the overall Men's Open results, but he was a player again today, riding into another top-3 overall placing on the stage.

The racing at this year's race wraps up tomorrow, with riders finishing up with one last day in Bald Eagle Stage Forest. Mercifully perhaps, the day's 26 miles should be relatively fast for those that choose to race it. For others, it will be a rolling party as they start celebrating their week at singletrack summer camp.
